The story of us
I don’t know if it is the baby, or the fact that our 10-year wedding anniversary is approaching, but I have been having flashes of memories of how we grew to be US.

I’d like to write about it. I am not a great writer, I have a decent command of our language, but am better trained and prepared to write research papers and grant proposals than I am anything entertaining. I will start with my outline (see, research paper) and see what happens from there…

First time I noticed NotBatman
Getting invited to Sr. Prom
Our first Date (Ren. Fest, proposal, Flatliners, Shooting Star)
Prom (sleeping at Minnehaha in the deer den)
Proposal #1
Canoeing at Eagle Lake
First day of College (for me)
Our Engagement
Weekends at ChaoticSilly’s
Our first car
Our first apartment
Our marriage
Our wedding
Buying our house

I have a very clear image of the first time I noticed NotBatman. What I see is two guys walking toward me as I am making my way out of the English wing at North High, I have a vivid image of the taller of the two, a striking young man in a red T-shirt and blue jeans, strutting down the hall in tennis shoes and a blue jeans jacket. It is freshman year (1987/88), and I am still struggling to “fit in”. I can clearly see the “I “heart” NY” button pinned among a few other smaller pins on the jacket. What sticks in my mind is noting that he somehow was cool without being “in”. I could tell from the way that he walked and the smirk on his face that he didn’t care what anyone thought of him. That unlike myself, he had confidence and was completely comfortable being who he was. Next to him is an obviously close friend who seems a little more subtle and shy (it was MPuzzle). It is a very clear and fleeting image, but I remember hoping to have a class with him, and thinking he was pretty cool.

By the end of Jr. year, I knew the two young men I had seen walking down the hall that day a little better. DMSK2000 had spent some time writing to MPuzzle on a desk each day, and we had all spent time bullshitting on the phone as teenagers tend to do. NotBatman and MPuzzle sometiems hung out with my group of friends in "the mall" for lunch. One day they were looking at the photos they had just received from Prom Night. MPuzzle had gone with some girl I didn’t know, and NotBatman had gone with MPuzzles older sister. That year I had gone out on prom night with my boyfriend (JamisonRocks), TenandTonic and another North High Senior (not to prom, but out for prom). I knew that the following year, my boyfriend would be away at College, and I would have no one to go to Sr. Prom with. So, I asked NotBatman that if he wasn’t dating anyone next year, could we go to prom together? He said sure.

(early Sr. Year, Fall, 1988), One of those days that feels like 4 days (like in the Steve Martins the Jerk)
At the beginning of our senior year, I began hanging out with "the boys" after school (NotBatman, MPuzzle and DMSK2000’s former boyfriend Matt). I was very subtle the first few times, sitting outside, waiting for our busses… "I don’t want to go home, but I don’t want to stay at school...". After a few days of hanging, I finagled an invite to the Renaissance Festival with MPuzzle and NotBatman. NotBatman picked me up early in his very cool Dodge Craftsmen 100 van, and we made our way to "Garretts" house to pick up MPuzzle. We got a little lost, but made our way to some suburb or another to grab him. We got directions from Garrett’s mom, and headed out to the Festival. I believe by this time, we had taken to listening to Anthrax’s TIME over and over and over again at deafening volumes while in the van, and spent the time traveling singing at the top of our lungs. At this point, this wasn’t a date; it was just me hanging out with two of the guys. While jamming to the tunes, we somehow got lost, and to this day, NotBatman swears that he does this all the time, but I got my first glimpse of one of NotBatmans nervous behaviors. I remember him chewing the skin from his lips… Anyway, after stopping to ask for directions, we finally made it to the Festival.

I believe it was the last weekend of the Festival; it was bright, sunny, breezy and cool. I don’t remember much about the Festival, except that it was cold, and NotBatman and I did “dueling buckets". After he immediately hit my target, thus pouring a bucket of cold water on me in my thin, white, cotton peasant shirt, I missed all three of my shots. I don’t know if they always do this, but the guy running the game made it so NotBatman got dowsed too. So we were both soaking wet on a breezy 50-degree fall day. Needless to say I was cold. I think MPuzzle gave me his sweater to wear, and I snuggled with NotBatman to get warm.

When we were done snuggling at the Festival we went over to MPuzzles. While we were sitting around, I started to rub NotBatmans shoulders. Apparently he liked this, because he asked me to marry him! When we got bored of sitting around, we decided we should go to a movie. We found that Flatliners was playing, and we could still get there in time. Mikes mother wouldn’t let him go, since it would get him home late, so NotBatman and I went together. I don’t remember anything about being at the movie; I just remember that it’s the movie we say.

When the movie was over, NotBatman drove us back towards my house, but as we got close, I realized that even though it was getting quite late, I didn’t want to go home. We decided to go spend some time at the playground at Lake Harriet (I only lived about a block away). We spent some time on the swings talking, I don’t remember about what, but I think we were both flirting pretty heavy. After a while, bats started swooping our heads, and we were really starting to get chilly, so we went back over to the van. We found that the engine block was still quite warm, so rather than getting in, and getting me home, we leaned against the hood of the van flirting some more. At some point, we saw a shooting star. I said, "make a wish", and we both did. After a few minutes, I said something stupid and corny like "wishes can’t come true unless you tell them to someone" hoping that he had wished for the same thing I did. After a bit of teasing about that, we somehow realized that we each had wished the same thing, but neither of us made a move.

Ahhhh yes, NotBatman's first conversation with ConanDammit.

CD: "I'd like to get to know you, since you're porking my sister an' all."

I love stories like that! I hope you write more!

And I keep forgetting you guys were all from North High too! I was a freshie in '93 and Becks and Leah Bourgeois often told me stories about you guys...!

That's right! That was during my years off from that awful place.

I'm so glad this fall is my graduating semester. It's gone to hell in a frickin' handbasket.

"and we had all spent time bullshitting on the phone as teenagers tend to do."

I didn't get too involved in all that nonsense, for the most part.

Except, you know, the day I had MPuzzle fold me up in the hide-a-bed in their living room. Turns out, I'm all about talking with weird chicks on the phone when I'm trapped inside a couch. :)

It was somewhere around that time (same night?) when MPuzzle, Matt and I drove the van over to DMSKB2000's place to see you guys. And because we were retarded teenage boys, we spent most of the visit driving up and down the street and around the neighborhood with one or two of us "surfing" on the roof of the van.

Very nice stories, by the way. I hope you continue the series.

That was awesome!

I will always think of that as my John Hughs's moment (80's director of the Molly Wringwald movies, in case anyone didn't know...) You guys threw snowballs at my window (wasn't it winter?) and we looked out and saw you three out there. I believe you were surfing from the back of the van weren't you? Hanging on and skidding in the snow while (YIKES) Matt drove? Why the hell did you let Matt drive anyway?

Good times...
